Independent watch brand, Richard Mille, had a lot of news and great product at this year’s SIHH — including another great new look of women. Working with high-tech materials yet again, Mille unveils two new watches made of North Thin Ply Technology (NTPT®) carbon — this time set with diamonds. A master at high-tech materials, Mille shows his ingenuity in the new RM037 NTPT(R) Carbon Set women’s watch with diamonds.
While last year Mille mixed NTPT(R) carbon with gold, this year he went about figuring out how to get the carbon material workable enough to set it with diamonds. Because the material is composed of layer after layer of carbon fiber filaments, infused with reset and woven on a machine, the finish of the case has a grainy look that is different with every watch.
This Richard Mille RM037 NTPT(R) Carbon Set watch features 250 diamonds and a skeletonized movement.
Unlike gold or other precious metals that can be carved to create prongs or settings for diamonds, NTPT® can only be worked with special CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machinery and diamond tools. Each case is specially prepared by creating hundreds of tiny (0.25mm) holes into which hand-polished gold prongs are inserted.
The new RM 037 NTPT(R) Carbon Set women’s watch features date at 12:00. Two pushers built to resemble water drops allow for easy access to the functions. In the center of each watch a small tonneau-shaped dial is offered in a choice of either jasper, onyx or pave’ diamond. Powered by an in-house skeletonized automatic caliber, CRMA1 with baseplate in black PVD titanium, the RM 037 retails starting at $150,000.
