IWC Goes Purple For Singapore With New Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Watch

Formula One watches tend to come dressed for the racetrack: carbon, titanium and, increasingly, plenty of team colors. For the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix, IWC Schaffhausen is taking a decidedly more colorful route. Its newest Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team arrives with a rich purple dial inspired not by the race car, but by Singapore itself.

Unveiled ahead of the Formula One night race at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, the new 41mm chronograph marks the fourth official team watch IWC has created for its longtime partner, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team. IWC has served as the team’s Official Engineering Partner since 2013, while the dedicated team-watch series began in 2022.

The color is what immediately sets this one apart. Purple is a first for an IWC Pilot’s Watch, and the saturated shade takes its cue from Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim orchid. The flower was bred in Singapore in 1893 by horticulturist Agnes Joaquim and was later selected as the country’s national flower. It also makes for a pretty dramatic watch dial.

Against the purple background, IWC retains the Petronas green that has become a visual signature of its Mercedes-AMG Petronas watches. The numerals and markers appear in the distinctive green, while the black hands are treated with green luminescent material. A matching purple rubber strap completes the decidedly high-energy color combination. The dial follows the vertical arrangement that has long distinguished IWC Pilot’s Watch chronographs, with the elapsed minutes displayed at 12:00 and running seconds at 6:00. The day and date appear together at 3 o’clock.

Of course, beneath all that purple and green is a serious racing-inspired chronograph. The 41mm case is made of Grade 5 titanium, a material that makes particular sense in a Formula One-related watch. Lightweight, corrosion resistant and known for its high strength-to-density ratio, titanium is used extensively in motorsport. In Formula One, high-strength titanium alloys are even used for the Halo safety structure that protects the driver’s cockpit. IWC gives the titanium case a brushed finish that emphasizes its slightly darker, silvery-gray appearance.

Inside, the watch is powered by the IWC-manufactured automatic Caliber 69385. The mechanical chronograph movement uses a classical column-wheel architecture and operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour. It offers approximately 46 hours of power reserve. The movement can be viewed through the sapphire crystal case back.

The watch is water resistant to 100 meters and fitted with IWC’s EasX-CHANGE system, allowing the purple rubber strap to be exchanged without tools.

While the color scheme is new, IWC has been steadily building this family of team watches over the past several years.

The first arrived at the 2022 Miami Grand Prix, when IWC introduced the titanium Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 Edition “Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team” with its unmistakable Petronas green dial. In 2023, Las Vegas provided the backdrop for the Pilot’s Watch Performance Chronograph 41 Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, this time executed in Ceratanium with a black ceramic tachymeter bezel.

Then, in 2025, IWC stepped away from the chronograph format with the Pilot’s Watch Mark XX Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team, a slimmer three-hand automatic model. The watches aren’t simply commemorative Formula One editions: they are official team watches worn by mechanics, engineers and other team members trackside, as well as staff at the team’s Brackley, England, headquarters.

That makes the newest Singapore edition an interesting evolution of the idea. The titanium case and chronograph movement keep it firmly connected to the engineering and performance story IWC has been telling through its Formula One partnership, but the purple dial gives the watch a personality all its own.

And in a sport where milliseconds matter but image matters quite a bit, too, there is nothing wrong with showing up for a night race wearing a little purple.
