THe Panerai Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631 houses a new movement that was seven years in the R&D process and a new patented technology.
Long before “tool watch” became industry shorthand, Panerai was quietly crafting mission-critical instruments for the Royal Italian Navy—timepieces born of necessity, where failure was not an option. In that vein, the brand’s now-signature codes were forged: exceptional luminescence, robust construction, water resistance and, importantly, extended power reserves for prolonged underwater operations. That DNA still defines Panerai today. At Watches and Wonders Geneva 2026, the brand once again proves that heritage is critical.
With the unveiling of the Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631, Panerai introduces a new mechanical benchmark: a 31-day power reserve, the longest ever achieved by the maison. It is a milestone that feels entirely on-brand—an evolution of a decades-long pursuit of autonomy—and one that comes backed by serious technical muscle. The new hand-wound P.2031/S caliber is the result of seven years of R&D by the Laboratorio di Idee, bringing together engineers and watchmakers in a focused push to redefine endurance.

The new Panerai Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631 has a power reserve of 31 days — a first for Panerai.
Power reserve has always been a cornerstone for Panerai. From the eight-day Angelus-powered pieces of the 1950s to the in-house P.2002 and 10-day P.2003 calibers, the goal has remained consistent: reliability over extended periods without intervention. Now, that philosophy culminates in a full 744 hours of operation when fully wound.
The movement itself is a technical tour de force. The skeletonized P.2031/S comprises 276 components and 25 jewels, beating at 21,600 vibrations per hour. It uses four barrels in series, containing a combined 3.3 meters of mainspring, to ensure a gradual, even release of energy. The low-torque, fast-rotating barrel system minimizes friction and wear—critical for maintaining performance over such an extended duration.

The movement offers four barrels with nearly 10 feet of barrel spring and a patent-pending Limited Torque system.
Meet the Panerai Patent-Pending Torque Limiter System
Central to this achievement is the patent-pending Torque Limiter system, and it is here that Panerai gets especially clever. Rather than simply maximizing duration, the brand focuses on usable precision. The movement is capable of up to 36 days of power, but the Torque Limiter effectively “trims” that range—cutting off the unstable high- and low-torque phases at the beginning and end of the energy curve. What remains is a perfectly optimized 31-day window of consistent chronometry.
Equally important, the system maintains ideal tension in the mainsprings, reducing stress on components and enhancing long-term durability. After the 31-day cycle, the movement deliberately stops—even with residual energy remaining—to protect the mechanism. It’s a highly engineered solution that prioritizes performance over bragging rights, and it speaks volumes about Panerai’s approach to real-world functionality.
The watch also incorporates a patented spring geometry with a jumping hour function, allowing the wearer to adjust the hour hand independently without disturbing the minutes or seconds—an understated but highly practical complication for travelers.
Visually, the PAM01631 balances innovation with restraint. The 44mm case is crafted in Panerai Goldtech™, a proprietary alloy of gold enriched with copper and platinum for enhanced durability and a warm red hue. The skeletonized architecture reveals the movement’s complexity, while remaining legible thanks to Super-LumiNova® accents and a cleanly executed dial layout.
A tour around the dial showcases a curved power reserve indicator along the perimeter, offering an intuitive readout of remaining energy, while the polarized date display appears discreetly at 3:00 without disrupting the open-worked design. The signature Luminor crown-protecting bridge and bold silhouette remain, grounding the watch in familiar territory.
As expected of a true tool watch, performance extends beyond the movement. The piece is water-resistant to 10 bar (100 meters) and undergoes testing that exceeds that rating by 25 percent, ensuring reliability under pressure. It is fitted with a Panerai Goldtech™ folding clasp featuring the PAM Click Release System™, allowing for secure wear and easy strap changes without tools.
Limited to 200 pieces, the Luminor 31 Giorni PAM01631 is a clear expression of Panerai’s core philosophy: pushing functional watchmaking forward while staying anchored in purpose-driven design.Price is on request.
