Smooth to the touch, inviting to the eye, intriguing on the wrist – all descriptions of the newest Maurice de Mauriac Barenia leather NATO straps. These custom made straps for the brand are created in an array of colors – but my favorite is the cocoa-hued strap (unfortunately not shown here) – that is rich, exotic and ultra visionary yet vintage. Barenia leather –for those who don’t know – is made of French calf that is double tanned with chrome and vegetable and then soaked in hot air drums consisting of a host of different fat contents (mineral, vegetable, animal) to give the leather its amazing quality of suppleness. The straps take quite some time to produce – anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks – but in the end the full grain leather without out any dimples left in it – is smooth and natural, and will gain its own patina over time.
