For those who really know their watches, you may recall the “older” Magellan watch brand – created in 2000 by Everhard Vissers, who loved mechanical watches. Inspired by a ship’s compass, he created a truly original horological product – the Magellan 1521 domed crystal watch and semi-spherical domed dial reminiscent of Magellan’s around the world voyages. This watchhad so much to offer with its curved map-style dial and bold technology. Sadly, it simply never took strong hold. Until now.
Just two years ago, the Magellan Watch brand was purchased by Mario G. Nargi, a watch executive with a penchant for strong concepts and innovative technology. Now, he unveils the new generation of Magellan Swiss watches. The new pieces hold three patents on them, including a patented crown, a patent on the three-dimension globe shape sapphire crystal and dial (which called for the development of a
special module on the mechanical base movement, ETA 2893), and a patent on the latitudes that depict location like a compass on the NH models. Additionally, the magnifying effect of the sapphire crystal with its perfectly rounded height, and the invisible lugs -make the watch compellingly alluring and comfortable at the same time.
To create the watch, several years of reseach and development were required. It utilizes sn ETA automatic base movement with eight tubes that enable the hands to reach up to the height required because of the domed dial. There are more than four separate processes employed to create the sapphire crystal dome (which is 2-1/2mm thick).
Among the newest styles: the 1521 NH series with a 24-hour hand in the shape of a sun that indicates longitude position of the sun over the northern hemisphere above a map of the hemisphere; 1521 Magelluna – a series of sky inspired watches that includes the Planet – a deep blue lacquered dial with gold flecks to emulate the night sky; 1521 Golf, with dial created using an actual golf ball; and so many more. My personal favorite – the Magelluna with a dial that emulates the moon’s surface.
All timepieces feature curved hands to fit the dome curved dial, and are crafted of top-quality materials. The ingenious new watches retail from $6,000 to $30,000 and are well worth the jewelry-store visit to try them on. Beware, though, you’ll be mesmerized.
