With the last weekend of August upon is, it’s time to seriously indulge in those last summer cocktails. I can see it now, sitting poolside or ocean side with a tall, cold drink and a great Swiss watch. Luckily, Swiss watch brand Angelus, with roots dating back to 1891, has an answer that bridges both passions: cocktail-inspired watches. The creative brand has introduced a limited series of eight different skeletonized flying tourbillon watches inspired by classic drinks such as the Negroni and the Tequila Sunrise.
Each of the brand’s eight new U23 watches is created using high-tech materials with colors that reflect the drinks they are named for. Those colors can be found on the skeletonized PVD-treated titanium bridges that are part of the complex A-250 caliber. The movement features an open-worked barrel at 12:00 and offers 90 hours of power reserve. The flying tourbillon escapement at 6:00 is constantly in motion as it works to compensate for errors in timekeeping due to the effects of gravity on the watch when it is in certain positions on the wrist.
The 42mm cases of the watches are made of ultra-light, super-strong, scratch-resistant titanium and CTP (Carbon Thin Ply), which is made of hundreds of layers of carbon placed in alternating positions and pressurized at extremely high temperatures. The carbon fiber is extremely hard, ultra-light weight and antimagnetic. Even the mainplate of the movement (which acts as a pseudo dial) is crafted from carbon. Since this is such a rigid material, all of the holes in the plate that the jeweled components are placed in are set with solid gold chatons
The different versions include the U23 Negroni with orange accents, U23 Cosmopolitan with blueberry vodka hues (although I have never had a Cosmo with blueberry vodka and doubt very much I would want one), U23 Ocean View with the Curacao blue tones, U23 Tequila Sunrise with orange, pink and blue layers that come from the fruit juice and grenadine against the blue sea. The watches are all water resistant to 30 meters and each version retails for a cool $43,000.
So before you relax to enjoy the last vestiges of summer, pick up one of these incredible watches before they’re sold out. Let everyone know the kind of cocktail you drink. I’m just sad that they didn’t make a dry and dirty vodka martini for me, with an olive, of course.
