With Fourth of July almost upon us, America’s 250th birthday celebrations are about to kick into high gear. While fireworks will light up skies across the country, one of the most spectacular tributes will unfold in New York Harbor, where dozens of international tall ships will gather for Sail4th 250, a six-day celebration marking the nation’s 250 years of freedom. Playing a role in the multi-day event is a watch brand whose story has been intertwined with New York for a century and a half: Bulova.
I’ve had close ties to Bulova throughout much of my career, and one of the things I’ve always admired is the company’s unwavering commitment to its New York roots. Founded in Lower Manhattan in 1875, Bulova has never lost sight of where it began, even as it grew into one of America’s best-known watchmakers. That makes its partnership with Sail4th 250 feel less like a sponsorship and more like a homecoming.

The connection runs deeper than geography. Bulova’s first retail store opened on Maiden Lane, just blocks from today’s South Street Seaport, where much of the 250th celebration will take place. Even the company’s earliest advertising reflected its maritime ties. In fact its very first advertisement featured a clipper ship.
To celebrate, Bulova unveils a limited-edition timepiece created exclusively for the historic event. The Bulova Sail4th Snorkel watch is crafted in hight tech ceramic in white to underscore the red, white and blue color ways for the 250th anniversary of America. The dial is red and the rotating bezel is in red, white and blue. It is powered by a quartz movement and is water resistant to 100 meters.
Beyond the commemorative watch, though, we are already witnessing the countdown until the once-in-a-lifetime spectacular even. That countdown, on Sail4th 250’s website, is “Powered by Bulova.” Additionally, Bulova will have a significant presence throughout the July 3-8 festivities, including hospitality areas during the Parade of Sail and the International Naval Review.

The brand will also participate in The Promise of Liberty Collection and Exhibition at the South Street Seaport Museum, where visitors can view rare founding documents, including the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Declaration of Independence.
For me, that’s what makes this partnership so appealing. It isn’t simply about placing a logo on an event. It’s about a New York company returning to the city where its own American story began. Sometimes the best watch stories aren’t just about what’s on the wrist. They’re about the story behind the watch.
