Frederique Constant Classics Moneta Moonphase Watch
I have to admit that I generally gravitate toward larger watches. Even with my relatively slim wrist, I prefer watches in the 38mm to 42mm range, and rarely go below 36mm. So, when I recently had the opportunity to wear the 34mm Frederique Constant Classics Moneta Moonphase watch with salmon-colored mother-of-pearl dial, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. As it turns out, this classically elegant watch has a lot going for it, including a surprisingly nice fit on the wrist and a contemporary flair.
One of the first things that caught my attention was the dial. The salmon-hued mother-of-pearl offers a soft, warm appeal, with subtle shifts in color as the light plays across its surface. Adding dimension is the rose gold-tone fluted inner flange or bezel that surrounds the dial, just beneath the slightly raised sapphire crystal. In fact, it is this detail that gives the watch its Moneta name, inspired by the ridged edge of a coin.

The Frederique Constant Classics Moneta Moonphase Watch retails for $1,595.
I particularly like the way the fluting and raised crystal work together to give an otherwise traditional looking watch a more contemporary twist. The overall effect is both vintage-inspired and modern.
Of course, the moonphase indication at 6:00 is another appealing feature. Set against a deep blue background, the golden moon and stars offer a welcome pop of color and a touch of whimsy without detracting from the watch’s understated elegance.

Frederique Constant Classics Moneta Moonphase watch measures 34mm in diameter.
The polished stainless steel case is finished in rose gold-colored PVD and measures a slender 8.34mm thick, allowing it to sit comfortably on the wrist. Inside is the Swiss quartz FC-206 movement, which keeps the watch accessible in price while eliminating the need for regular winding.
The model I wore came on a black croco-pattern leather strap, which gives it a classic, unisex appeal. Personally, I would love to see this watch on a rich red strap for a little extra pizzazz, or perhaps a salmon or camel-colored strap for a more tonal look. Fortunately, changing a strap is an easy way to make a watch your own.
Retailing for $1,595, the Frederique Constant Classics Moneta Moonphase offers an attractive combination of elegance, practicality and distinctive design. And while I still prefer a larger watch, this one reminded me that sometimes a smaller timepiece can make a surprisingly strong impression.

The Frederique Constant Classics Moneta Moonphase watch is a deft blend of classic and modern.
